Electronic Engineer
£50,000 - £60,000 DOE, plus benefits
Wokingham / Reading
My client is the leading 2-dimensional mass spectrometry (2DMS) company, offering innovative services and products to enable true data independent acquisition (DIA). They were formed in 2018 as a specialist spin-off to a larger organisation and offer the chance to play a key role in a growing company.
Due to growth, they are looking for an experienced Electronic Engineer to join their team on a permanent basis. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of low voltage analogue design/development, high voltage systems design and experience in instrument software development (using Visual C++, VB and LabView).
This is a great opportunity to join a new team to be part of a disruptive technology in MS and would suit those looking to move into a commercial career, or someone who wants to gain some industrial experience. There will be plenty of opportunity to publish results given the innovative nature of 2DMS.
Principal Responsibilities for the Electronic Engineer:
- To lead the integration of all precision power supply modules, this to include a key emphasis on low noise, low THD of the supplies and their synchronisation with other systems.
- To ensure that all future development includes continuous design improvement/innovation and documentation leading to high integrity solutions that meet their performance requirements
- To work closely with a small but highly skilled product development team of scientists and external consultants to develop and improve instrumentation in order to meet business objectives and customer specification
- To carry out systematic test and debug of all developed systems and maintain clear and detailed test reports and documentation
- To provide support for all stages of the product development lifecycle: R&D, Production and Field Service.
As a small start-up company, all team members will have a flexible working approach and be prepared to get involved in anything that needs their support. We are looking for people who are flexible and willing to tackle issues that are outside the scope of their formal job description.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s or higher in Electronics Engineering degree or a related discipline with an emphasis on hardware (and where applicable related software) development
Key skills for the Electronic Engineer:
Applicants will be able to demonstrate at least a number of the following skills:
Electronics:
- Knowledge of low voltage low noise analogue design/development (DC to @2GHz bandwidth) and integration into digital systems for computer monitoring and control.
- High voltage systems design to 10KV with HV signal generation to 2-3KV at 2MHz bandwidth and low noise. SMPS and linear PSUs design and development.
- Development of linear amplifiers, HV pulsers to 2MHz at 1KV.
- Use/development of OpAmp and transistor circuits for amplification, filtering, and signal isolation.
- Use of high speed data acquisition (ADCs/commercial boards) and high speed signal generation (DACs), PCIex bus, and fast serial communications.
- Electronic systems design with sketch, PCB layout and manufacture for prototype and new product development.
- Minimum 3+ years industrial experience in precision circuit design including simulation using SPICE or alternative modelling tools.
- Ability to research and integrate solution to custom or commercial instruments.
- Experience of complex instrumentation or similar systems, ideally mass spectrometry.
- Project management for electronic instrument development and application.
- Use of EDA tools and related manufacturing outputs (the actual platform is not important) and an attitude to adapt to new environments.
Software/Firmware:
- Experience in instrument software development for custom data acquisition systems.
- Expertise in Visual C++, VB, and LabView for instrument control.
- Experience of developing real time imaging applications with preferably high pixel depth (16bit+ depth levels).
- Use of memory based techniques, .Net/COM interop, overlapped I/O for instrument development.
- Experience of signal processing, Fourier analysis, feedback control systems, and related algorithmics and models.
- Experience in Firmware tools and devices such microcontrollers, FPGAs, CPLDs, and DSP hardware.
Other Skills:
- Knowledge of mechanical systems such as those used for Vacuum instruments.
- Knowledge of cable design with grounding and earthing techniques.
- Good physics and chemistry knowledge
- Manufacture of instrument to given standards (EC marking etc.
- Prior experience with working with Scientists and Academics.
In return, my client offers the chance to play a key role in ground-breaking organisation. Sound interesting and something you would love to be part of? Apply today!
